so i’m 17 and i’m currently applying for colleges. i REALLY wanna go out of state as i live in a small town and have for my entire life and i wanna see what else is out there. i also want to major in environmental science and most of the really good colleges aren’t in my hometown. but my parents want me to stay here cause they’ll miss me. i told them i understand, and i’ll miss them too, but i have to pursue a higher education and the colleges near my home aren’t very good. now they’re treating me different and being all crabby. usually they’re so supportive, so i don’t know if i should just stay in my hometown to make them happy or follow my dreams and go out of state.

Please don’t sacrifice your life for their selfishness. It really is selfishness, of the lowest kind: parents imposing guilt on a child.
ReplyThis is difficult common dilemma. They say that if you love your work, it won't ever really feel like "work", so if you actually know you have a passion for a certain type of work then your time invested in obtaining an education in that field will be well served. With online video calls and video phone calls nowadays, you can practically see your parents everyday via a phone call. And of course visit them every chance you get. If you decide to stay home, you will need to be sure you will find an alternate passion in your hometown college, I mean, since after all there are tons of career opportunities. Best of luck.
Courtesy notice: the following includes a reference to a book that contains writings over 2000 years old which are mostly parables about human nature, both vile human nature as well as moral human nature, parables that are meant to teach us to learn and grow, including the teachings of Christ Jesus. No religion required, and better yet: no public displays of devotion required, although the former and latter are admirable if practiced freely out of one's own free will and without the threat of being beheaded. Some bullies will label this "trolling", so "change the channel" now if of no interest to you.
1 Thessalonians 5:11
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
Mark 12:28-31
And Christ Jesus said the 2 greatest commandments are:
Love God first and foremost.
Love your fellow-being as you love yourself.
From following or not following these, all good or evil cascades, respectively.
Love...that powerful, invisible, intangible force that cannot be denied; even atheists live and die by it.
