Before about an hour ago, I'd had a good night. About as good of a night I could have had, PTSD considered. Then footage of the war in Palestine was posted to my instagram feed—a war I was selfishly, deliberately avoiding engaging with because of how I feared the constant reports of tragedies would affect my already shaky mental health—and I just couldn't look away. I saw a man mourning over the grey, dust-covered corpse of another man after a refugee camp had been bombed, and that led me to more footage that broke me entirely.
I saw a woman singing absently to a white cloth sack that contained her child who'd been killed in an air strike. I saw a toddler half-buried under tons of rubble—alive, but barely—weakly flailing an arm in what I imagine was the last of their strength. I saw a father kissing his deceased teenage son on the forehead before pulling a white sheet over his face for the very last time. I saw two sets of tiny feet poking out from under the rubble of a collapsed building, the attached bodies likely flattened by the debris. I saw rows and rows of children, covered in dust, and they all look like they're asleep—yet somehow I can't comprehend the fact that they'll never wake up again.
I don't know what to do with all of this grief. It doesn't take any common ground other than our shared humanity for me to feel the pain of these people. There's a child in my life I can't imagine losing. Every day hundreds of Palestinian kids are casualties of the war.
I suppose it's indicative of a life of priveledge that I've never known the suffering and loss that war brings. But even though I'm only watching from the other side of the globe, I mean it when I say I've never known anything like this. I'm not religious, but the scale of the atrocities committed against innocent Palestinian people have me questioning why any god would be silent in all this.
Where is God now? I drew a tarot card earlier—my one tether to anything spiritual, and even my connection to that is failing. I asked the deck a question: where is God in all this? I drew the 5 of Pentacles.

ReplyThat is correct, but then they used it for harm :/

"Ask the Children of Israel how many Clear Signs We gave them! And when a people tamper with God's bounty after it has been bestowed on them – then indeed God is severe in punishment." (Chapter 2: The Cow, Verse 211)
As an agnostic (was Muslim, but not due to religion trauma), I too am not that religious, but as mentioned in the verse I have provided for you, this was one of the verses in the Qur'an that wasn't burned along with a few other ones (I couldn't find them). I believe we can all have faith, and that we must keep up with the protests, donations, and aid to Palestine! It breaks my heart completely of what's going on there. I know how hard it is to deal with it, especially witnessing it on the news, and other way of seeing on certain social media platforms.
The more we keep protesting, the more they can hear us with ours, the weaker the "Israelis" will be. Just keep on trying to help!

ReplyThanks a ton for the link. I also believe that continuing to do what we can to support Palestine and using our voices in any capacity to oppose Israel's cruelty is necessary right now. It's the least we can do. I've found a few links on my own, though if anyone else wants to provide links/other ways to offer support to Palestinians in need I'd love for them to be posted as well.

ReplyI'll start out by saying I'm a Christian. Just like you, I'm very disturbed and upset by what's happening over there. I pray about it a lot, and I know that one day God will fix this world. Every evil person will be punished and every innocent person will be rewarded. They may not get what they deserve before they die but they will certainly get it after. I assure you, God is watching. He's welcoming these children into the gates of Heaven.
I've seen a lot of tragedies and I can tell you from experience that talking it out with God is the best way to get through it. Of course giving money and things certainly helps too, but God wants to hear from you. Talk to Him and He'll listen, and even if you're upset or confused, He will comfort you.
