My parents never taught me how to fight.
They wanted me to talk out my problems.
I learned on my own, eventually.
I fought back against bullies.
I fought back against teachers.
I fought back against my own parents.
It became a part of me.
The bell rings.
Who is my next opponent?
I can’t see them.
My opponent is invisible.
She won’t fight.
She’s attacking, but not with fists.
She shatters my mind instead of my ribs.
I can’t fight back against this.
I don’t know how.
The bell rings.
She has won.
My fight isn’t over yet.
The bell rings.
Who is my next opponent?
Somehow I know the answer.
I grab a knife.
I’ve never used it before.
Somehow I know how to.
I attack.
Over and over, making cuts in her skin.
She collapses.
She is about to die.
My opponent is me.

ReplyWow I never expected that ending. I hope that isn't the truth. I relate to quite a lot of the poem. If you get knocked down get up to fight another day just let don't let the enemy be your own self.
ReplyI can relate it.
ReplyThanks for sharing. In my humble experience it is incredibly difficult to never forget that our vessel is just that, a vessel in this adventure called life. We must take care of our vessel, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Mental health is critical - hopefully expressing your feeling through your gifted poetry helps you and helps others who read it.
Courtesy notice: the following includes a reference to a book that contains writings over 2000 years old which are mostly parables about human nature, both vile human nature as well as moral human nature, parables that are meant to teach us to learn and grow, including the teachings of Christ Jesus. No religion required, and better yet: no public displays of devotion required, although the former and latter are admirable if practiced freely out of one's own free will and without the threat of being beheaded. Some bullies will label this "trolling", so "change the channel" now if of no interest to you.
1 Thessalonians 5:11
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
Mark 12:28-31
And Christ Jesus said the 2 greatest commandments are:
Love God first and foremost.
Love your fellow-being as you love yourself.
From following or not following these, all good or evil cascades, respectively.
Love...that powerful, invisible, intangible force that cannot be denied; even atheists live and die by it.
