Im 21F I've had headache/migraines for as long as I can remember, since I was a kid. It has always been tolerable (compared to now) but I remember missing A LOT of school because of them. I am undiagnosed and everytime I've visited the doctor/ER many times because of them all I'm told is that I'm dehydrated and sent back home. I'm so so exhausted from being in pain all the time. it's consuming my life. I've been out of work for nearly 2 years now because of them. I believe my mother may have passed something genetic down to me because I remember her having them all of the time as well but I cut contact with her many years ago because of neglect/abuse. None of my family members know what it could've been as she wasn't diagnosed either. I can't afford doctors or meds/ treatment if there are any. Its gotten worse and more frequent these past 3 years. I can have migraines anywhere from 1-14days EVERY MONTH. They are even worse when im ovulating/on my period. if I don't have a migraine I have a tolerable headache.. very rarely do I have days without pain. I feel miserable. Over the counter meds don't work the majority of the time. When I have these headaches it's Nearly impossible to lay down.. it hurts even worse. Not even to mention on my good days any sudden loud noise, certain smells, super bright lights, etc can easily trigger one. I eat, I drink water, I get sun, I'm decently active when I'm not in too much pain. These effect my life so much its depressing.. can't keep a job, days they are really bad I'm unable to complete household chores.. it makes going out difficult. I feel guilty for hurting all the time. My MIL wants to go out and do things and as much as I'd love too I turn most plans down. No one truly understands what I go through daily. No one remembers to consider how I'm feeling and will continue to be loud or have their tv/music up. I know it's a lot to ask for when it's so often... but anytime anyone else has a headache they are supposed to be babied but when it's me it doesn't matter. I know headaches aren't normal so when they do have one it's a lot for them.. but I just get so jealous (I guess) that they go hide away from everyone and have everything done for them but I never get taken care of... I avoid certain foods/drinks, screen time, and crowds to prevent causing or prolonging them. I only drink alcohol ont feel good days (and only ever 1-2drinks) ive never been drunk and never drank enough to have a hangover. Ive made the mistake of drinking w a headache and ill never do that again. I smoke Marijuana to help. My dad introduced me to weed when I was 16 to try to help me but I've only been smoking for 3 years now and it does help a lot but not enough. It doesn't get rid of my pain but it at least eases it for a short amount of time and helps calm my nerves so I can handle the pain better and relax a little bit. I've been doing research of Natural remedies and would love recommendations if anyone reads this far. TRIGGER WARNING- on a more serious note I've thought about ending it on a few occasions. Just being very straightforward. I just can't handle how often I suffer from this shit. I can't contain emotions, I'm always in a negative mood no matter how hard I try to stay happy-go-lucky. I get irritated very very easily. Can't work, pain nearly 24/7 .. I want to be done. I just recently started my life and haven't been able to do anything with it. Will I suffer until I die naturally? I don't want that.. I want to be a momma so so bad.. it is my goal in life to be... but how can I have a baby if I can't even handle the sound of my dog pacing back and forth? Or my cat meowing or purring right next to my ear? Or when I get so easily overwhelmed? God how depressing is that? .. I want to sob when in pain but will be in even more pain if I do. Any type of straining is instant pain. I can't even get a normal work out routine figured out. It's literally unsafe for me to exercise because I get light headed so quickly. I can barely sit through an entire movie. I just want to end everything. I've been very depressed in my life and even at my lowest point I didn't want to kms.. but this pain is going to be the reason. I don't think I can actually bring myself to go through it but.. it has been a thought more than a few times. I'm tired of waking up at 3-5am in pain and not being able to fall back asleep. I'm tired of not being able to go out. I'm tired of getting easily overwhelmed/irritated. I'm tired of not being able to complete basic tasks. I'm tired of not being able to bend over with straining and hurting my head. I'm exhausted. Emotionally, mentally and physically. It effects my vision, my movements, it makes me slur or mumble my words. So fucking done man. I just want one month.. one fucking miracle month where I'm migraine free. Please I can't even explain what kind of pain these cause. There's so many different ways it hits me.. different areas of my head and eyes. It can be dull or piercing. Some feel like fireworks, some like I'm wearing a really tight headband. There's so much more. I can't even wear my hair up because it pulls too much even if its super loose. I miss out on too much in life..

Magnesium and migraines
Magnesium side effects
Foods that contain magnesium

Takeaway
Symptoms of low magnesium include fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, and more. Low magnesium is also linked to headaches. For this reason, magnesium oxide is sometimes used to treat and prevent migraine.
Magnesium is an essential mineral that our bodies need to function properly. It can improve bone health, stabilize blood pressure, and help maintain a healthy heart rhythm and nerve function.
However, it’s estimated that many people don’t get enough magnesium through their diets. Read on to learn if happens when your body does not get enough magnesium.
Types of magnesium
There are multiple types of magnesium, which are sometimes used to treat different conditions. The body doesn’t easily absorb magnesium without being bound to another substance. Because of this, supplements often have magnesium combined with other substances, like amino acids.
The most common types of magnesium used in supplements include:
magnesium oxide, which can contain high levels of magnesium and is often used to treat migraines
magnesium sulfate, which is an inorganic form of magnesium, and only small amounts of the supplement can be absorbed into the body
magnesium carbonate, which has slightly higher levels of magnesium and is more likely to cause gastrointestinal upset
magnesium chloride, which is easily absorbed into the body
magnesium citrate, of which large amounts can be absorbed into the body; it’s often used to induce bowel movements
Magnesium and migraines
Significant research has shown that people with migraines often have lower levels of magnesium than those without them.
A 2021 studyTrusted Source found magnesium oxide to be as effective as valproate sodium at preventing migraine attacks without adverse side effects. Some older researchTrusted Source has also shown that taking daily magnesium supplements can be effective at preventing menstrual-related migraines.
Magnesium oxide is frequently used to prevent migraines. You can take it in pill form, with a general recommended dosage of about 400 to 500 milligrams a day. Magnesium can be administered intravenously in the form of magnesium sulfate.
Because magnesium is a natural element and is necessary for our health, it may be a safe migraine treatment. This is especially true when compared to migraine medications, which can come with more severe side effects.
Magnesium side effects
Magnesium is generally considered safe to take for most people, but taking it can result in some side effects. The most common side effects are abdominal cramping, vomiting, and diarrhea. If you experience these, you can try lowering your dosage for relief.
Another common side effect of magnesium is low blood pressure. If you already have low blood pressure, talk with your doctor before taking magnesium regularly.
Taking too much magnesium can lead to a dangerous buildup and can result in serious side effects, like:
irregular heartbeat
unsafe low blood pressure
slowed breathing
coma
For this reason, talk with your doctor before you start taking magnesium to ask about the best dosage for you.
Foods that contain magnesium
For those who don’t want to take supplements, some foods naturally contain magnesium.
Dark leafy greens like spinach and chard are some of the best foods you can eat. One cup of either contains between 38 to 40 percentTrusted Source of the recommended daily value of magnesium.
Other foods that contain magnesium include:
seeds, like pumpkin or squash seeds
almonds
mackerel, tuna, and Pollock fish
low-fat yogurt or kefir
black beans and lentils
avocado
figs
bananas
dark chocolate
While supplements can provide a powerful boost, it’s best to focus on getting magnesium through your diet by incorporating magnesium-dense foods.
Potential risks when taking magnesium
If you have digestive conditions like inflammatory bowel disease or a stomach infection, ask your doctor before taking magnesium. These conditions can affect how much magnesium the body absorbs.
Magnesium can also interact with other medications, including:
antibiotics
diuretics or water pills
muscle relaxants
heart medications
If you’re pregnant, consult your doctor before you take magnesium. For pregnant women, it’s generally considered safe to take 350 to 400 milligramsTrusted Source of magnesium oxide in pill form each day. It’s not safe to take magnesium sulfate intravenously, as that’s associated with bone thinning in the fetusTrusted Source.
Takeaway
When taken in safe doses, magnesium can effectively prevent migraines for many people. Since magnesium generally has fewer side effects than prescription migraine medication, it may be a more suitable option.
If you’re experiencing migraines for the first time, or they’ve increased in severity or frequency, seek help from your doctor. They can help you determine how much magnesium you should take and what other treatment options to consider.

ReplyI suffer a lot with headaches as well. I've been to the e r for them as well only for them to make me lie down in a dark room (when I could have done that at home) and just have me some weird pill. Not alot helps them. Its true being dehydrated can cause headaches. I saw a tiktok this lady swore by taking I think it was literal salt with water like half a t spoon or so with a glass of water she swore by it relieving her migraines though I've never tried it. I've heard of magnesium too helping. Also your vision can cause bad headaches I don't know if you wear glasses or not.
It did relieve my aunt's.
I hope you find something to help you I know headaches suck.
