I talked with my mom about it. I asked why she believed in God, and she replied that she chose to, or maybe she said because she wanted to. My mom isn't stupid, so this answer surprised me. I don't understand how it's possible to believe in something purely because you want it to be true, and how can she expect me to believe as well? There must be something deep here I'm just not getting right? I mean, I know nothing can be proven 100%, and there's always an element of faith when it comes to believing in something, but there has to be a prerequisite of evidence to build that faith upon. I've become very interested now in why people believe in God. For those of you that are Christian, I ask what made you believe? What advice would you give to someone looking for evidence?

I don't know why my girlfriend is like this; I love her more than anything serious. You don't understand how much I love her. There's not a line in the world I...
Post-Christian here. Personal trauma sent me to God, and views on sexuality sent me away from the church. I don’t think you need evidence. I think God finds you wherever you’re at. I now hold a much looser and inclusive understanding of ‘God’ than as a Christian. I also think not everyone needs God to justify their existence and that’s fine.
ReplyEvidence? Walk into a church sing the hymns and worship songs see if you don't feel God. It takes minor faith to believe not much at all.
ReplyI mean this in the most respectful way, but I feel like that's not a good way to tell if God is real or not because I can be moved by an Avicii song the same way I can with a worship song. It's really more about the chords than the content. Music can manipulate emotions easily. I'm really not trying to be rude at all. It's so hard not to sound rude when it's just typing.
ReplyI did a 12 month Bible study and came to know God and have a relationship with Him. After that I was in bed about to go to sleep one night when I felt a tap on my shoulder and instantly absolutely knew it was Jesus. Then 4 years later I felt Jesus leave me and felt The Holy Spirit enter me. Since then I have had many miracles happen in my life and God talks to me.
ReplyYou don't need to be Christian, Muslim, Jew, Zoroastrian, Wiccan, Hindu, Buddhist, etc... to believe in God. Religion is man-made and religion is nothing more than a form of expression.
True faith requires zero religion, but religion is humbling if you practice it out of your own free will and do not attempt to control or brainwash other people.
No one, absolutely no one living... is going to prove God exists.
It's called faith for a reason, and faith is a journey, not a light switch.
Besides the miracle of a human being born out of a human being, meaning some of us can't even make a bowl of cereal yet the most complex being on earth is made by the simple act of copulation.. there are numerous other reasons to inspire your faith.
But personally, the core reason is "love". God is "love". The opposite of "love" is every hurtful/hateful act people do to each other. You cannot buy it, sell it, or find it an autopsy, yet most of us live our daily lives revolving around our "love" for others. And there is NO love molecule. Even atheists believe in "love". God is "love", and that's my personal reason.
Courtesy notice: the following includes a reference to a book that contains writings over 2000 years old which are mostly parables about human nature, both vile human nature as well as moral human nature, parables that are meant to teach us to learn and grow, including the teachings of Christ Jesus. No religion required, and better yet: no public displays of devotion required, although the former and latter are admirable if practiced freely out of one's own free will and without the threat of being beheaded. Some bullies will label this "trolling", so "change the channel" now if of no interest to you.
1 Thessalonians 5:11
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
Mark 12:28-31
And Christ Jesus said the 2 greatest commandments are:
Love God first and foremost.
Love your fellow-being as you love yourself.
From following or not following these, all good or evil cascades, respectively.
Love...that powerful, invisible, intangible force that cannot be denied; even atheists live and die by it.
And since death is the only guarantee in life, Mary, Mother of Christ, intercede for us with your prayers, now, and at the hour of our death.
ReplyI don't mean to be rude in any possible way. I just wanted to say that believing in God does in fact put you in a religion category. I don't want to make anyone confused, but I don't see how you can just believe in God and not show any faith whatsoever by just saying I believe in God. You have to live like you love Him.
ReplyChrist Jesus was Jewish, and he rebuked the religious zealots for their outward hypocrisy in following "the law". There is a theory that he was starting a new religion, but based on man's interpretation of things, it could just be man trying to control people of faith. Christ Jesus' core message is to love God first and foremost, and love your fellowman as you love yourself. Christ Jesus said those are the greatest commandments, meaning live by those, and "you live like you love him". No religion required, but religion is humbling if followed out of one's own free will and you're not having wars over your religion being better than someone else's religion.
ReplyBecause every thing on earth goes back to him.
ReplyI'm a young Christian, and I can't say I have proof, but there is this insane feeling when you walk into church, with an open heart.
I love religion, because it gave me a purpose.
"Love people." Okay, why? If I want to just punch a kid, why shouldn't I?
"Bring people to heaven, so that they can be with God, in peace forever"
You mean people I love get to be happy forever? And I can help with that??
I do it because if there is anything I could ever want, it would be to see you and others in heaven. I want to see you happy.
ReplyIf you need advice let me give you some. I am no expert at everything, but let me help you. I have seen God's grace and miracles. Don't go looking on the internet at a billion different perspectives. If you really want to know more, go to a trusted adult. I know people might always tell you that, but it's true. I am not even 16 yet and I have seen amazing things through God. One of my experiences was that I started praying for something that seemed impossible, and it happened in front of my very own eyes. Like literally, try praying about it. Just say, God if you are real, show me and open my eyes to the truth. I hope this helps. (I will pray for you situation).
ReplyBut, you must keep your faith when a prayer is not answered, because sometimes the answer is "no". Read about Job.
