I cut my finger while wrapping presents.
It was slight; barely superficial.
I put on a small bandaid and went on my way, finishing all the presents in time for Christmas day.
The presents were strategically placed beneath the tree
so as not to give away my silly little folly.
Not an inch of blood would show;
Nothing would disrupt the holiday flow.
However, I encountered an issue as we unraveled
the days of wrapping and placing. I noticed the small spot of blood grow visible. I swiftly moved
the present out of view and hoped my issue was removed.
One by one, they picked away at their gifts,
their seamlessly taut gifts.
My eyes were fixed on that little spot of blood.
As it bled across the paper, my entire body was numbed.
No one seemed to notice.
No one seemed to care.
They remained focused on their large piles of things,
piles that acted as barricades.
As I sat before them and their useless knick-knacks,
my desire to save face dwindled.
I imagined breaking down their walls
And ripping up their cards.
I wanted them to see it
I wanted them to feel it;
The agony of staying strong.
The torment of carrying on.
More so, I wanted them to know
how much I dared not say.
My indefatigable restraint.
My tireless abstinence from complaint.
Instead, I remained silent.
I smiled as they opened gift after gift.
When everyone was done, I took the blood-ridden present,
And hid it in my closet where no one would have to see it.
No one but me.

Thanks for sharing... most of us get really caught up in the gift giving of Christmas. Try not to hold it against your loved ones. Which, incidentally, spending time with loved ones and remembering the birth of Christ Jesus, his ministry on Earth, and his sacrifice for humanity - those are the true meaning of Christmas.
Courtesy notice: the following includes a reference to a book that contains writings over 2000 years old which are mostly parables about human nature, both vile human nature as well as moral human nature, parables that are meant to teach us to learn and grow, including the teachings of Christ Jesus. No religion required, and better yet: no public displays of devotion required, although the former and latter are admirable if practiced freely out of one's own free will and without the threat of being beheaded. Some bullies will label this "trolling", so "change the channel" now if of no interest to you.
1 Thessalonians 5:11
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
Mark 12:28-31
And Christ Jesus said the 2 greatest commandments are:
Love God first and foremost.
Love your fellow-being as you love yourself.
From following or not following these, all good or evil cascades, respectively.
Love...that powerful, invisible, intangible force that cannot be denied; even atheists live and die by it.
And since death is the only guarantee in life, Mary, Mother of Christ, intercede for us with your prayers, now, and at the hour of our death.
