Okay, confession time. Not long ago, I (19/F) managed to cause a multi-vehicle accident through texting while driving and excessive speeding (10 miles over the limit). One of the vehicles involved was nearly totaled but, by some miracle, no one was killed or even hurt by my stupidity. So I was only charged with reckless driving, which is still a serious misdemeanor.
Anyway, a few days ago, I had to go to court for sentencing. The judge over my case decided I should have to spend some time in jail and sentenced me to 30 days. Luckily, I was given a few days to get my affairs in order. But on Monday, I have to self-surrender to the jail to begin doing my time.
Naturally, I'm super nervous about being locked up, but I also can't help but feel that I deserve it. After all, as I've already said, it was only dumb luck that no one was hurt. My friends and even my parents all seem to think my punishment is way too excessive. They all point to the fact that this is my first offense of any kind, as well as the fact that I didn't do this on purpose. They all seem to think I should've been slapped w/ a fine and given community service hours or something. I dunno, I have a tendency to be really hard on myself, so maybe they're right. What do you think? Is jail time for reckless driving too excessive? I could use the opinion of someone who can be more objective than myself and the people close to me.

must be a really scary ordeal for you.
ReplyA self-inflicted ordeal though.
ReplyI don't think it's excessive at all. It's only 30 day. Goodluck though, stay safe and please don't speed again.
ReplyIt's not just about speeding, it's about being distracted by texting when her ONLY priority should be driving.
ReplyIt's illegal to text while driving. These laws are there to protect you and everyone else. These laws are not made up for no good reason. They know that the human brain is distracted by texting and driving at the same time and therefore driving performance is worse. Be grateful you've been reminded at a young age to take your responsibilities seriously.
ReplyCompared to some stories I've heard of people getting wayyyyy less for causing accidents then they should have, this is actually pretty fair. I will say that it's a little long. 15-20 days would have been good. In all fairness, someone could have been hurt. Please be careful when driving in the future. But I don't know much about legal stuff, so yeah.
