Perspective: a haiku

I tell my daughter:

I know you’re hurting, my love,

so please feel it all.

It’s proof that you are

more than flesh and bones. You live.

You love and you grow.

You don’t have to date

to be broken up with, love.

That’s the honest truth.

I tell my mother:

You’ve never felt pain like this.

Love isn’t worth it.

But maybe it is,

you say? How much longer til

it doesn’t hurt me?

I’m willing to wait

and feel, but what is the cost?

Will it be worth it?
