Earlier this evening I was reading a few articles about dogs and happened to see one about the breed American Pit Bull Terrier. I clicked on it in a heart beat because I have a very loving 11 month old pup of that breed. I was just super excited to read something that was written by a breeder because HEY!!! The breeders surely know that all that stereotype nonsense is just that- nonsense. Finally, a positive truthful view. A breath of fresh air.
Wrong. The breeder did, to be fair, list a few good qualities: loyal companions, playful, intelligent, etc. However, she went on to say that ALL American Pit Bull Terriers have a very viscous side and are violent with other animals. Odin, my blue eyed baby, was in the middle of rough housing with my other dog, Chihuahua named Bridgette, when a tiny kitten came crawl-walking into the yard. He stopped what he was doing, walked up to the kitten, licked her, and then laid down next to the kitten and would push Bridgette away with his nozzle any time he felt she was getting too close to the cat. My husband and I fostered the kitten till we found someone to take her in and her entire stay there, Odin and she were best friends. She was HIS kitten. My dog is nothing but gentle with children. He sits when strangers pet him.
The article also said that EVERY American Pit is extremely stubborn. Wrong. He is the first dog, I am very inexperienced. My dog was completely potty trained in a month. That may sound like a long time, but keep in mind he was only 4 months old and we moved from Texas to Iowa 2 weeks into his training. He is very submissive. He wants to do nothing but please. My mother who dislikes dogs and absolutely HATED pits loves her grand-dog to bits and pieces. The only time Odin has done something remotely violent was when he protected me from an intruder. I was home alone, getting my dogs breakfast ready while they were in the back yard for heir morning potty break. I heard the gate creak so I immediately ran outside thinking that my husband might have forgotten to lock the tap latch (he normally only remembers to lock the middle) and my dogs were pushing on the gate door. A MAN HAD TRESPASSED INTO MY BACK YARD. Odin was in full sprint growling and barking in a way I had never heard from him before and chased the man out.
It is extremely upsetting. I'm tired of the stereotyping of this breed. And it's not just coming from uninformed people talking about what they don't know and assuming the movies are right, it's also coming from the very people who breed them. Shame on them.
