For YEARS, I have been trying to adapt into ordinary ways of teaching/learning....its not working and its affecting my future.
There's no accommodation/exception for you if you have a special need in the way you learn (not physical need). By this i mean, If you are a completely healthy person, schools will not do anything out of the ordinary for you if it means that you will learn better. This isn't taken seriously because it sounds like a complaint or a concern rather than a plea or a need.
If there's anything i learnt in my academic era, is that even though we have different intellectual-processing ways, everyone can be an 'A' student but time is not on our side. If you are considered smarter than the other person it means you just understand faster than them. (Maybe with a better reasoning too but that's a story for another day) Its all about time. Which is unfortunate.
Let me explain...
1. Schools, whether its private or public, they focus on the majority. By this i mean majority of students learn through interaction with teachers and are more disciplined when they remain at school. And then we have the small minority who would like to be provided with a content and rather study on their own. I am one of them. I am someone who can not be given an activity right after being taught because i need time to process the information. And for some odd reason, teachers think everyone will get it if they do that. The tragic in that is you are actually wasting your time trying to respect the rule of ordinary ways of learning. Especially subjects like mathematics, some of us need 3 business days until we figure out what's going on (which we eventually do better, rather than in class activities/sessions.)
I spend my time at school 8-9 hours daily (11 hours until i return home) I even wake up earlier to attend to other aspects of my life. With in the 8 hours i spend at school, i attend about 9 classes. This makes it even more harder to actually learn anything because by the time i get home i am TIRED. I do study but not consistently. Yes i am working on that. Schools don't actually care about the minority, In my lifetime i have only seen one teacher who was willing to understand and gave me space to study peacefully, out of her class. I know there is solution for this and blaming schools wasn't one. However, students like me will, unfortunately, have to walk the extra mile to attend to this problem.
