Why do homophobes and transphobes always try to act like we make a big deal about pronouns? I asked this transphobic person at my school why they didn't like trans people and he said, "They make such a huge deal about their pronouns. There are more important things in the world." By 'making a big deal' he meant (this was our first interaction ever):
Me: Hey, can I have a pencil?
Him: I don't have one. *Leans over to friend* Do you have a pencil? She needs one.
Me: Oh, sorry, it's actually they.
Him: What? They isn't singular. It's plural. You're a she. I'm going to call you a she. It's not a big deal. There are more important things. Why are you so entitled???
Me: Sorry, I just wanted a pencil....
Him: *Leans over again* SHE wants a pencil. *Smirks at me*
It would've been way easier for him to just say they instead. I understand if you get it wrong the first couple of times (it's hard to adjust to) but I just corrected him. I'm not going to get mad at him over something little like that but he acted like I was. If someone says, "The best flavor of chips is ranch." I'm not going to fight with them because I don't agree. I'm gonna move on with my day. I agree with him, IT TRULY ISN'T A BIG DEAL. Just call me what I want to be called and everyone is happy. You don't have to, but it would be kind. I'm not offended easily but people like him make it sound like I am. No need to make a mountain out of an anthill.

Coming Out to Parents

Yes, one person (you) is singular and should not be referred to as 'they'.
ReplyNot really, if I say, "I found someone's watch. I will pick it up and give it back to them so they become happy." Then it is grammatically correct. One argument is, "Well that's when you don't know the person's gender." But I'm outside of the gender binary, so I am (basically) genderless. And that is my decision.
Fun fact: They/them pronouns have been used since the 1800's!
