Oh gosh. Some girl at my high school today was telling her friends about this new hack for freckles that she uses in her make up routine. Some girl came up behind them (who didn't have freckles btw) and said, "That's cultural appropriation! Some people are BULLIED for having freckles!"
I have freckles and a button nose. I have dirty blonde hair with natural lighter highlights in them. When I was in elementary school, kids used to say, "Oops, is there dirt on your face?" "Why do you have such a big nose?" "Why is your hair two colors?" And at the time it got to me. I wished I had a different body.
When I see that the new trend is to have blonde highlights, a button nose, and freckles it makes me feel beautiful. Not repressed. Nobody can go back and fix what happened to me as a tween. But what we can do is tell everyone that they are beautiful. Because these features ARE beautiful. There's nothing wrong with appreciating them.
My friend who is Ukrainian put sectioned braids in her hair. She put them in because she had an allergic reaction to mosquito bites all over her body. It protected her hair from getting damaged and frizzy because her scalp was inflamed. Everyone at my school told her, "Do you think you're black or something?" (This was mostly from white students.) And when she told them what happened they just rolled their eyes and said, "Yeah, right."
She NEEDED to wear a hairstyle like that to PROTECT HERSELF. And even if she just wore them because she thought they were pretty, THAT WOULD BE FINE TOO.
This is tiring...

Freckles are cool. But isn't makeup usually to enhance your current features or hide baggy eyes and stuff like that? I'm not against what she did though, just never heard of it.
The braid thing reaction is weird. Nothing wrong with doing the braid thing.
ReplyFreckles are a good look. So is blonde hair. Don't let others make you feel less than they are because of some random garbage they just pull out of their butt. You're fine just how you are. Now go and have a good day :)
ReplyLike you said, the people complaining the loudest aren't part of the group being 'offended'. Not sure what that's about, whether they're being overprotective (a good thing) or if they're just finding reasons to criticize people for trying anything new (a bad thing).
If it's something like taking away jobs, like white Hollywood actors pretending to be black when there are tons of black actors who would love the role, then I totally get the outrage. But if it's just a personal choice by someone who likes the look and wants to be that way, then jeez, let people do it. Like you said, it presents the trait in a positive light and makes people feel beautiful.
