So many things wrong with this.
Different cultural groupings had -- you know -- different cultures, so it is whitewashing to try to make them similar.
In nations that had a more egalitarian structure like the Iroquois you don't find any of this because gender roles were not hardened. In the more hierarchical plains tribes, any reference to a third status meant slave or a man who refused to go to war.
But this had nothing to do with sex or this modern concept of gender. Nor was it some "sacred caste." And I am totally horrified to think they would think any tribe would be in favor of self-sterilization after what happened to them as recently as the 1970s.
The condescension and open homophobia (and erasure of homosexual history) would be called out in any other situation. People have fought for years to teach accurate native history and culture and to have this colonizers' version to be imposed now is an insult.
Transwashing of history seems to be spreading to justify something that wasn't a thing until 2014.
