I'm an aspiring, trainee History teacher located in the centre of the United Kingdom. This year has been a strange one for me, I graduated from university with a degree in Politics & International Relations, travelled what has become the cliche route of S.East Asia and had a fantastic year up until I left for that trip. From August, I lost the only girl I have ever loved and the week later, was kicked out of my parents' house - I take solace in this due to the old aphorism that 'these things usually come in three's'! I understand it has only been what? 5 months? since we split but it still hurts more than ever - we were only together for 2 years which makes it hurt, but I appreciate other people have had it way worse. Today, I started the New Year by deleting my social media accounts - Instagram/Snapchat - I just do not see the use of these things in my life (I have traditionally, paradoxically, moaned and moaned about instagram etc for the vanity it breathes for many years but could not bring myself to delete it!) . I developed this feeling once walking around a stately home (where I used to work) for the Christmas themed tour - in every room, myself included, was just full of people taking pictures on their smartphones of any object that looked 'Christmassy'. I sat and thought to myself - 'but are we really looking at this' - or are we actually just thinking about the likes, comments and dopamine releases that this virtual popularity produces? What do you guys think? I myself was even at one point after the break up posting pictures of anything - quotes etc etc to gain some sort of social acceptance after being ditched - yes I know I sound like a prepubescent girl.
Anywho, I just wanted to post something quick and get some feelings and ideas down. Comment, tear me apart, challenge me... do as you please, but I wish you all a very happy, healthy and prosperous 2017 :) Cheers.

I agree with you, they are posting for the likes, but also to fit in. It's the social norm, you can watch a bunch of studies on it, but basically people do what everyone else does to fit in because no one wants to stand out and because of the dopamine release. Many studies have proven that the addiction is real.
ReplyIt's pretty crazy really isn't it haha especially as I observe history everyday to almost compare how things were back in the 1900's to how things are now! Just shows an inherent desire for material wealth rather than love and people! Thanks for your post, will have to look into the research and studies on dopamine release.
