Tonight I had a dinner at home for my sisters 23rd birthday. The whole family was there including my fathers parents and one thing happened that I just really cannot forget. The plebiscite in Australia is causing much controversy and at dinner the topic was brought up. It came to my attention that my own father and his parents will both be voting against it. Now I completely agree that they everyone is entitled to there own rights but I find it so hard that someone that is related me could think like that. Now our family is catholic and my grandparents especially but they could not just get there heads about the whole situation. We brought up that even Ireland a very catholic community has decided to give the rights to those of the same sex to marry, however my Grandma added that that they weren't so catholic after all as they agreed to such an out-righteous act. Later my dad mention that " if it was called something different" then he would vote yes, but that is not equality and I find it absolutely appalling that someone could actually say something so rude and sexist. He also mentioned that the definition of marriage is a man and a women and it shouldn't be just a man married to man or the same with a female. By this stage I was getting very angry my own father and grandparents saying such appalling stuff that I really can't handle. Life on earth is changing and people do not follow live everyday life the same as it used to be. Humans need to understand the evolution of society and the way it is changing because these stereotypical judgments are not the way in which our society should be heading as where does that leave us for the future. I'm just so sick of people making judgements and not being able to accept this issue because it is not part of gender norm.
I may only be 16 but this debate is seriously stupid people should be considerate of others and that everyone has equality. After tonight I really cannot look at my Dad the same way.

I agree and disagree with you. I’m gay and yes, this situation in Australia is bull crap. But I also believe everyone is entitled to there opinion, and regardless of if we agree or disagree with that opinion, we must still respect that persons opinion. I disagree with people who think same sex marriage should be legal, and I disagree that homosexuality is a sin. Regardless I don’t hold that against them.
ReplyShouldn’t be legal*
