It's not that I don't appreciate the help that I receive, it's just that the advice sounds so generic to me. It's as if the person giving the advice is just repeating something that they read or heard; they aren't really taking my personality or my specific situation into consideration. It doesn't help that we live in a here-and-now world, where everyone needs answers immediately. I feel like people are in a hurry--or they feel like I'm in a hurry--when they give me advice. They don't ask probing questions to understand the situation and they don't take any time to ponder my words. I could see them thinking that I might get upset if I didn't receive an immediate answer, since the majority of people would get upset.
On the other hand, if I did mention that I'm not in a hurry and invite them to ask probing questions, I feel like they would feel obligated to ask questions and, therefore, it would make the question useless because I forced them to ask the questions.
When my parents give advice, it's hard to take it because it's very generic or it's not advice at all. I might mention something that is happening in my life only to have them respond with, "You'll figure it out." That is not the response that I wanted and it's not advice at all. Of course I'll figure it out--everyone figures it out! Even when you give up, that's figuring out that it wasn't meant to be. There's a reason why we're not all astronauts: We figured out that it's not for us. I mean, that's a high paying job--you might say the salary is out of this world--yet we don't become astronauts.
Another thing that people fail to factor into the advice equation is the interaction with another person. How do you know that the other person will respond positively to the advice you're giving me? Much like with getting a job. Another person has to review my resume and when a friend says that my resume looks good, they do not make the final call as to whether or not I will get the job.
