When someone does something to upset you, have you ever noticed the effect it has on your body? You may feel hot, shoulders tense, and your heartbeat might increase. Often, you’re too caught up in your frustration to realize these changes though.
Being mindful allows you to recognize when you’re feeling this way and choose whether or not you want to act on your anger. Simply put, mindfulness means being more in control of your thoughts and how you react to them. With practice you can take more time before instantly responding to the things that happen to you.
If you do your best to apply this every day it can have a radical change on your life. All you need to do to access this mindfulness superpower is... (drum roll please) ...learn basic meditation!
A quick Google search for free meditation guides, or a trip to your local library, should get you started in the right direction. Meditation and mindfulness won’t solve all your problems, but they can have a significantly positive impact on your life and they’re something you can start doing right away.
