INSTRUCTION:
Purpose
The purpose of your first paper will be, first and foremost, to inform your reader, to expand the experience and knowledge of the reader by giving a glimpse or a comprehensive view into a new area of life. This primary purpose may be joined by other aims. You may wish to make a case for some point of view, provoke a response of outrage or pity, bring some social injustice to light, or amuse your reader through your words. Your ideas, beliefs, and attitudes will become a part of your paper.
Topic
The topic of this essay, also, is entirely up to you. Considerations that may guide your choices are the relevance of the event, the ease with which the significance of the topic can be conveyed, and the reader's potential interest in the case. Because clarity is key, you may wish to choose something that you know well, or have recently learned about. Whatever you choose, you should do some research to fill any gaps in your own knowledge in order to convey the most complete picture possible to your reader.
Perfect objectivity is impossible, of course, but if you are factual and objective, your reader will trust your authority. Concern yourself with defining a particular perspective and being consistent. Students have done very well describing a volunteer experience, profiling an interesting person, exploring a seldom-seen part of a neighborhood, reporting on a concert or sporting event, detailing an experience with a health issue, getting a piercing or tattoo, profiling an unusual group, and dozens of other topics.
Be careful, though. This is not an narrative essay. You can describe an experience, but you'll need to do much more than that to create a good reporting essay--you'll need background, historical or other information to supplement a typical narrative, establish credibility, and show us the context/importance of your topic.
Form
Keep in mind the needs of your reader. Assuming that he or she is not terribly familiar with your subject, you, the writer, will want to begin by laying out the terrain that your paper will cover, then employ narration, description, summary and analysis to get your point across. You will also have to make decisions about appropriate tense (past or present) and person (first or third). Again, let your subject matter and the reader's needs guide you.
