I asked my boss for a raise today. Or, to be more accurate, I asked my client if it would be okay with him if I raised my rates. He said no. Where the IRS is concerned, I'm a 1099 Independent Contractor with a small business and one client. But if you look at what's legally required for someone to be a 1099 vs W2 (employee), it's pretty clear that this is more a case of an employer deciding to save some money by having their employee pay their state and federal taxes, plus FICA and Unemployment (which I'm ineligible for should they decide to fire me), and calling them an outside contractor. I never want to ask for more than I deserve, but over the months more responsibilities requiring more skills have been added that were never factored into my initial price. I'd just like to be able to move out of my parents' house. It's tough keeping it a secret that he's breaking tax and labor laws between me and our virtual assistant in the Philippines. When days like this come up where it sinks in that they're scamming me, I always think about tipping off the IRS. I just don't think I could take the guilt of possibly ruining his life and business. But then I'm left knowing that when I leave, they'll just do this whole thing over again to someone else.
