I currently work as a supervisor in law enforcement. I get so tired when people come up to me and say "Thank you for your service."
Most people really don't understand working in law enforcement.
They think it's a really deadly and dangerous job being a cop in America.
In the United States where I live it's more dangerous to be a construction worker or even a nurse. Garbage collectors proportionally die at a higher rate and sustain more workman's compensation claims and injuries in the USA than law enforcement officers. So do even people employed as U.S. fishermen and firefighters.
It's really ridiculous.
Whenever a USA law enforcement officer dies everyone freaks out. It always becomes front page news and makes headlines. People all talk about it. People set up money collections for the fallen officer's family. The communities set up huge memorials and convoys of fellow agency law enforcement officers who attend huge funerals and processions for their killed comrade. Towns and cities rename streets, parks, and schools in memory of the fallen officer. The community builds memorials at parks and civic centers to cherish the officer's dedication and memory.
But when a U.S. convenience store worker or taxi driver dies or gets injured on the job--occupations more likely than U.S. law enforcement officers to die or get injured at work--well, that's just how it goes. Life goes on.
When's the last time in America there were huge headlines when an American tree logger or truck driver--work trades statistically more dangerous than being an American cop--made the national news headlines?
It's just stupid myths.
It's pretty smart of American law enforcement officers. I have coworker's making over a quarter of a million dollars a year. They sit in big offices really doing hardly anything.
Recently I got roasted by my law enforcement commander for pointing out the absurdity of law enforcement pay.
I guess honesty really isn't the best policy.
