So I made a new friend recently. But what I don't understand about him is the way he responds to me. Like, if on one day I'm particularly cheerful and say hi properly, he'll responf with the same cheerful tone. And the day I'm feeling average and behave average-ish, he'll do the same with me. The day I'm just ok and give him a half smile by way of greeting,he'll do the same! And today I got depressed after seeing my Calculus midterm grade so didn't bother to say anything at all, and he ignored me too! Usually when I greet him he'd have already sat in the seat in front of me. But now that i ignored him he sat two columns away from me instead of right in front.
What's going on? Why does he match his responses with mine? I find that weird, none of the friends I've made before have been like this. Am i overthinking here?

Trust Issues

I do that too. Its nothing weird. In his mind, he is scared to be over friendly and under friendly so he matches it with you so he is not judged for either ignoring you when you say hi or saying hi cheerfully when you don't.
ReplyBut he doesn't need to be scared... most people are fine with having people around them who are happy and cheerful most of the time. I think he should just try to be himself, rather than depending on my moods, because tbh I'm a depressed person...
ReplyIt's called "mirroring". There are two kinds: normal mirroring and narcissistic mirroring. Be wary if it's the latter.
ReplyAlrighty, I'll Google these terms and find out about them. Thanks!
