For a while now, things have seemingly settled into a good rhythm (or so I thought, but it was just that I missed certain key factors). I felt my 11 year old son was growing out (or up) of his behavioural issues.
Then about 4 weeks ago I started to get calls from his school and after school care teachers asking whats going on. It appears that he is exhibiting unusual behaviours that I never noticed till they pointed it out and then I was like...yes... your right, now that I think back.
They asked me to get him reassessed. The teacher was very careful with his words that indicated my son may be further on the ASD spectrum (Asperger or autism) than initially thought.
The teacher told me that he feels once we get that diagnosis on paper then the school will have to make extra allowances and leeway on his behavioural issues.
As explained to me by his teacher, he said that most schools will view ADHD and ODD as general naughty behaviour and usually not take this into consideration when a child is not following whole school rules. But once we get it into writing a further diagnosis then he will be given a lot more help and understanding when he does bad behaviour.
So now I ponder if all this time he actually was on the ADS spectrum and how I and everyone else could have understood him better. Was those ADHD meltdowns really an Autism meltdown, which I do believe is quite different and maybe I could have handled it differently....
