So there is this writing competition about purpose at my University(UT Austin hook 'em!) and was wanting to receive feedback on it. I appreciate pure honesty. If it's bad, tell me why you think so and I will listen. If it's good, the same applies. If it sounds pretentious, god please tell me. It's probably my biggest fear/insecurity whenever I do write. However the truth is the only thing that will make me aware of it, and truth is the one thing I will always appreciate even if it is negative towards me. Seeing as this is anonymous as well, I have faith that the truth will shine through with every response. So here it goes:
Purpose is around us. It’s something that we so easily seek to attribute to one another, because we know individually it’s something we struggle with finding within ourselves. Through the perspective of a variety of different things, we are empathetic towards an experience, because that is the very foundation of our existence.
Purpose is subjective. We allow it to drive us daily, yet rarely question why it is we think the way we do in an objective way. What if we lived in a society where hate and not love is what one should strive for, or if our main goal in life was to turn into a frog? We often fail to remind ourselves how fragile our views and circumstances really are, because through that reminder we can gain an understanding of others. Much of ourselves is really what the world tells us to be because of how we are and look, yet we claim it as our own because we as humans want to feel special. We often ask ourselves the question,”Are other people as aware as I am? Do they feel the same and do the same things, just in a different way or mindset?” The obvious answer is yes, but if people are as aware as they claim to be individually, why do we choose to show what we are aware of to other people, even when it matters most, and often fail to take into consideration the deeper thoughts/meanings behind people’s actions even if we don’t agree with them? Do we think so highly of ourselves? Perhaps it is more likely that we show our purpose through our actions, and what we see as ourselves has little relevance to the world around us.
Purpose is changing. As we develop a greater understanding of our consciousness and sense of self, we somehow become more ingrained into our habits and mentality rather than more open, as our understanding of the world grows. Perhaps it is due to the fact that at the end of the day all we truly have and know is ourselves. Over time, we fail to recognize the simpler facts of life so that everything accommodates to how we would like, rather than accepting them for how they are, and that includes other people. We become selfish in our view of the world, yet claim selflessness to make ourselves feel better about our own flaws. We claim empathy only when it is convenient, and not always when it matters. When a couple divorces and has children, we often side with what is best for each individual parent, and view children as proprietary or even a tool for manipulation rather than valuing the gift of consciousness the children were granted, and the responsibility that comes with raising a new opportunity at life, and what that represents.
I find purpose and value in objectivity, while recognizing that it is through my own subjective viewpoint I see the world because true objectivity is something no one can achieve. Recognizing that the world isn’t perfect, that nothing is guaranteed, as well as taking responsibility and being honest with oneself, are all objective truths we live and struggle by. Politics, while crucial, are meaningless when we are on our deathbeds and look back on the most important moments of our lives. If it were up to anyone, we’d be able to choose when to die and everyone would be open minded to both sides of a conversation. Even through different viewpoints, they all come from the same place of looking for purpose in everything we do and are, and we attribute our beliefs to that purpose. Not everybody is going to have the same philosophy on life, and by no means should hate or iniquitous actions be advocated or tolerated, but appreciate the fact that even if other people have hate towards you or even themselves, they were given the same chance at life we all were, and that in itself is a gift because this consciousness is the only one we were afforded.
Relish in the insecurity. Bathe yourself in the anxiousness. Indulge yourself in love. Be aware of hate or disliking, while weary of its toxic effects on our bodies physically and mentally. Thrive in the world around you and the body you were afforded. We often complain of experiences or fear them while taking for granted that we're able to experience in the first place. We hear and claim to have an understanding of the phrase,” Create the purpose you seek to find,” yet look for it outside of ourselves because most often it is within ourselves, but it is ourselves and the unknown of the present we remain fearful of. For whatever reason we were given the gift of consciousness, so why not challenge our own ideas or sense of self? Acknowledging ourselves and where we come from is important, but being mindful is a necessity.
Ironically, purpose is truth. Ironically in the sense that none of us really know the truth or can claim to, all we know is our own. The true purpose of everything, including ourselves, we will never truly know, and it is arrogant to claim otherwise. But that’s the beauty of everything at the same time, isn't it? We are allowed to be arrogant. We are allowed to be selfish. We are allowed to be good. We are allowed by some force within and even outside of ourselves we can’t even conceive.
Purpose is constantly contradicting
