Today I was not having a good day and I got to work, I felt down. I’m a shift leader at work and we have a new guy who’s been working there about a month. He took out his phone his speaker and started listening to his football game, I said I don’t want to see you on your phone and standing there for more than 5mts. But he said “ You don’t pay me to be telling me what to do, you always say you’re the whatever you are but you’re not my boss. I dont care you guys can fire me” & I said no I don’t think I’m the boss here but if our boss was here you wouldn’t be doing “this being on your phone thing” and everyone saw; I clocked out because he has no right to talk to me that way, I didn’t want to argue anymore. That was the last thing I Needed today. I broke. I got in my car and cried and drove while crying💔😭. Then I informed my boss about what happened and she said this is what you should have said honey for next time because this won’t be the last time you will encounter an employee like that. You should have said yess I Am in charge when my boss isn’t here and if I’m telling you TO GET OFF YOUR PHONE, YOU GET OFF YOUR PHONE! PERIOD. But no, I left. I know I have to be stronger and strict with my words. But seriously tell me what place is going to let you stand around and use your phone, for more than 5mts. I was so pissed.

Holy hell this sounds like something I would do omg This hurts. He’s lame! I need to be more assertive to! We can do it. We’re cool as hell. *ungodly screeching*
ReplyWell there are those who will have no regards for what they're told. It's irritating for people to blast stuff on their phone, be it music or some sports game or whatever. There's this fantastic invention we have called "headphones" and if this job requires full attention, then that's gonna mean nothing. No headphones, no playing with a cellphone, nothing.
As much as you don't want to enforce those rules because maybe you're not the confrontational type, you'll eventually learn to stand your ground. It's intimidating to have to correct others, so don't feel bad that you had trouble doing it.
Beyond that, you also gotta try to not just leave. Yes, you can go take a 5 minute breather and clear your head, but you can't just jump ship because of belligerence. I know you're probably already weighed down with enough stress as it is and I get it, we're all in that same spot right now.
Everything is raw and sensitive, but you still need that time for a paycheck and the dude sounds like he could use a good reality check.
In the very least, it didn't escalate beyond that. It's gonna take some time to get used to that, even though it really isn't something you should have to "get used to", it's just a fact of life. There are those people who are too stupid for their own good.
ReplyThank you ! Oh my gosh It is very intimidating to tell people what to do, there is an older lady as well who just stands there till her order is ready instead of cleaning or filling up or getting stuff ready for other orders. So I told her once, while you’re here I want you to look at the tickets and see what else you’re going to need and she said “ I KNOW HOW TO READ” like what?? I never said she didn’t 😑 but yes people get defensive !! Like, other places have their rules too! And then wanting to do whatever they want wherever they go is not going to get them anywhere. The reason why I clocked out as well was because once he saw I was getting ready to leave that’s when he stood and watched his game even longer. So that’s when I told him and he told me off. I personally didn’t want to keep arguing because the rest of the employees were just watching. Thankfully my boss was very supportive and she said there are plenty of other people jobless right now who would be glad to take his place if he can’t follow simple rules.
