The subject of our debate project is “animals used for entertainment should be released from captivity”. Our teacher is encouraging us to focus on examples that strengthen our argument.
I thought about an animal very close to where I live… a whale named Lolita. She was captured from the wild at a very young age. Hasn’t seen another orca in over forty years. She’s forced to perform even if she is injured (which she has, in the past). And she’s in the smallest tank in North America.
I don’t know how they could do this to her. They’re all, “oh, we want to conserve wild animals”. How about focusing on the one YOU PEOPLE ripped from her habitat in the 1970s? The one who is slowly losing her mind, pacing around in a 20-ft tank, when normal orcas can travel up to 140 miles in a day. I haven’t thought about Lolita in months, but now I can’t keep my mind off her.
She’s an old lady now. I know they will never set her free. They will never move her to a sanctuary with other whales. That’s because they are ignorant cunts who care more about making money than they do about the lives they ruin. They spent all their money on building elaborate pavilions for their clients. They spent not a cent for Lolita. Not a single cent for her happiness.

Thats sad
ReplyI know it's tough, but I might suggest moving away from vulgarity in your arguments. I know you're voicing your frustration here, and that's a very good thing.
I don't have to think very hard to know there's a lot of truth to your view on why these people choose not to do the right thing for this animal, Lolita. I think you're right on the money when you say that they only care for their own personal gain.
Though I do question what the benefit of this was for you. Knowing this information with absolutely no way of actually voicing the immorality of it all, that puts a lot of stress of you and I can easily see why it would occupy your mind so frequently.
Is your teacher's intention to take these debate points and actually use them, say like an article or a formal request to the corporation in question? Where does this go? Or are you just left here, having all this sense of injustice stirring inside you?
ReplyI agree with what your saying. What I don't understand is why people humanize animals? We are different species. Or is that the only way to get other to sympathize? I have noticed that this has lead to us caring more about mammals than other classes of animals. We should learn to care for all wildlife. So if you could please take into consideration to not humanize the animals in your debate even if it is a better way to stirr people emotionally.
