A MORE SELFLESS PERSPECTIVE
Labeling with language (using words to describe something as distinct or to describe it as being different from something else is necessary in most forms of communication and thought. It allows us to remember, analyze, plan, convey and receive information, and to coordinate actions and cooperation. Over-thinking, however, can cause problems. When I think of events in my past as being very good or bad, and the people involved (myself included) as being right or wrong, my thinking has gone too far. The same is true when I feel that it is really important that a particular outcome happens or that some other outcome does not. I don’t control the future.
Being present, not thinking much about the past or a preferred future, increases my mental clarity and ability to adapt. My sense of self (self-awareness) comes from my memories. I seem to be the same person from one day to the next. However, I don’t think these memories offer an accurate account of what is really going on here. Assuming nothing, I am simply that which is happening right here, right now and you are that which is happening where you are, right now. We are moment to moment expressions that are arising in CONSCIOUSNESS.
As a happening in CONSCIOUSNESS, I think, perceive, react, communicate, and move around in a nearly perfect environment with a livable temperature and the right amount of oxygen in the air. Without other people I would be extremely lonely. They also provide safe drinking water, my favorite beer (yes), food, clothing, shelter, protection, tools, medicine, entertainment, transportation, etc. I just happen to be living in this special environment populated with people I very much depend on. I did not cause any of this to occur. Sometimes I forget how fortunate I am, get caught up in ‘my personal story’, and become defensive when my point of view is challenged.
Going forward I intend to be less attached to beliefs and expectations. The more I accept that everyone is OK as they are and accept that, sometimes, bad stuff happens, the easier it will be for me to cope and remain hopeful. I’m in this process of living here and now, being spontaneous and creative when I can or behaving like I usually do. I don’t pretend to know the true meaning of life – who or what we are, why we are here. However, since I am here, I will make the best of it by focusing on the joy in this experience and helping others do the same. Being alive is a blessing.
