I am afraid of feeling embarrassed. So much that I often fail to make the right decisions for my future because I am afraid of making mistakes and what other people will think of me. It felt like my mother and father would make a big deal out of my mistakes and I would never feel better about myself. How do I handle feeling embarrassed?

Stop caring about what others think of you and stand up for yourself. Tell your parents that everyone makes mistakes and that is how they learn.
ReplyI should have told them that when I was younger. Then again, I did not have the knowledge and vocabulary then that I do now. Now when my parents talk about something I am embarrassed about, I tell them to stop. If they continue, I walk away (when possible) or change my tone of voice. Not the best way to handle that situation, but I don't know what else to do. They are emotionally immature, that's something I can't fix.
ReplyHey there, I'm a public entertainer so I know aLLL about embarrassment and how to get over it. The best way for me is to dive right into my mistakes, own them, joke about them and suddenly they become part of the fun.
For example I'm a singer and I've hit some LOUSY AWFUL notes in front of hundreds of people. Feels like you're going to die. But then afterwards I talk to other singers and we joke about the worst screwups we've ever done, and suddenly I'm eager to tell everyone about my lousy notes. Everyone laughs (with me) and it's like that demon goes away.
You can apply this to everyday life. There's a site called FML where people post hilariously embarrassing things every day. Check it out, post your own. Or even post it here. Just make sure you do it in a fun joking way, not like feeling sorry for yourself. Have fun with embarrassment, that's how you win! If I fall on my face at the next show you bet I'll have a story to tell everyone, that's what matters :D
ReplyHmm... I can joke about my mistakes under the right circumstances. With friends and sometimes strangers, yeah, I can joke about my mistakes. Around my parents, not so much (then again I feel much more self-conscious around my parents, so that has a lot to do with it). I guess how I handle embarrassment really depends on the situation, the people I am with, and/or my mood. \shrug
