Is it normal to have a 'depressive' phase. And I mean it as feeling down, having negative thoughts, unmotivated, less energy or excitement, stressed, sadness out of nowhere, withdrawal tendency, feeling inferior and chest feels full of unexpressed emotions. Thing is, like I said, it's only a phase for me, for like 1-2 times a year for a few weeks. I am usually mentally healthy and clear minded as in I like to find the positive in things, actually enjoying life at some points and be a mental support for people even. But every once or twice in a year, I'll experience those things I listed above. It's been like that since I was a child and I don't know what's with it. At some point, I did thought that I may be depressed but after the phase is over, that was like a far off conclusion.

Yes, I think. There are all kinds of things that can bring about feelings like the ones you describe. I am not a doctor, but from my experience:
It's not always capital 'D' Depression, but the DSM only requires that you have symptoms for 2 weeks to qualify for a diagnosis.
Since you know it's only temporary, and normal for you, then I wouldn't be too worried about it, but it might be worth checking in with a doctor, just in case it's linked to something else.
For example... I had the same symptoms for months as a result of Vitamin D deficiency. I can feel blue for days, depending on what part of my menstrual cycle I'm on. If I leave it too long before I make dinner in the evenings, my mood drops into existential despair before I realise that I'm just hungry.
I know some people get really badly affected by the seasons, and I definitely feel less good about life in January/February than most other times of year.
Knowing your body's cycles and when something feels "off", just give yourself permission to take care of your emotional and biological needs while you're going through a rough patch. Even if they don't last more than a few weeks at a time, depressive episodes suck. Be kind to yourself!

ReplyIt's not normal to be unhealthy. An unhealthy body is not productive.
