i'm in the point of my life where i had to decide what should i take on college. due to financial circumstances, i can only afford to enter a university near our home, so now i have limited choices on what to take. my father picked 2 kinds of courses for me, and they were architecture and engineering. it really pressures me so much because those choices don't align with my personal interests/preferences.
to be honest, this whole thing is really tiring and frustrating. it has bothered me for years. i may have said earlier that i have "personal interests/preferences," but they are also a blur to me. i don't know what to do with my future, my life. i always tell myself to be successful and achieve great things, but how am i going to do it? what exactly do i want to do?
well, i had a dream before when i was younger. looking back, it was nice to be so interested in something. that was astronomy. i wanted to be an astronomer, but i knew it is mission impossible. i cannot have a career in astronomy in our country. to pursue it, i had to go overseas. contrary to the bright stars that i admired, my future on that field was dim. accepting that reality, i decided to not chase it anymore. while i am still fascinated with the universe, it is not as much as before.
a little bit older, i came to be a little interested again in another field of science this time: biology. but the thing is, i don't know what i specifically want. i just know that i want to work in a laboratory and do research. still, even if i do want something specifically, it is out of my reach yet again. expectations, desired income, and many other things to consider. it is too tempting to turn my back and just run away from all of it.
looking at people around me, maybe i am a bit jealous that they are so sure of their chosen career paths, and that they can achieve it. but for me, i'm completely lost. it is so easy to say "do whatever makes you happy no matter what others say" or "experiment around and settle on what's best for you," when in reality, it is so difficult to do.

Hey :)
I'd suggest you take a gap year to avoid dropping out mid year. While you're on that break, find a job and save that money towards your other goals or even better the overseas college you want to go to. Remember you are never old for school, so don't worry about taking even 2 years off to work while you figure out your passion.
While you're out there seeing people etc, you will eventually know what is made for you. It could be something you never even thought you would enjoy.
Little story about me, I did graphic design, always loved it. Got promoted to Marketing Lead, I don't like it, I am good at it hence the promotion but it's not me. It's not like design. So go out there and try new things, trust me you will get it.
Good luck :)
ReplyAlso another thing just to show you how life doesn't always go as we want, I went to college instead of university because I passed with a diploma in high school, not a bachelor. So that college was option 2 but the graphic design course from that college got me my first job before I even graduated.
Sometimes things happen for a reason. But in your case, haha we need to figure out that passion. Oooooh I just got an idea, try volunteering jobs as well. It will give you a broad view. You'll realize faster what's made for you.
