Is it my fault that he crushed my heart so hard?

So, my friends and I have a group chat, and the guy I'm flirting with, let's call him Matt (who also flirts back with me pretty frequently), had added a friend to the group chat a few months prior who we'll call David, but David became a more annoying person day by day because he was trying to fit in with other people who we all disliked. He began by just entering the group chat to "jokingly" bash us, but most people were irritated. So every time David did that, he got booted, occasionally by me, but often by others. Yesterday, he did it again and just entered the chat to call me an elephant, call someone else a nobody etc. and others were annoyed by it so he got kicked. Matt didn't believe me no matter what I told him and assumed I was kicking him. Then he started to act distant with me. Today he posted something saying he's feeling sad, so I private messaged him and asked what was wrong , and told him that he could vent to me whenever he wanted. He thanked me and said he's OK now. I told him that if he didn't want to talk about it, I wouldn't force him to, and that the only thing that matters to me is his happiness, and that he could always talk to me. However, despite being quite engaged in the group, he disregarded my private messages. (He was also generally ignoring me in the group). After a few hours, someone posted a meme about shutting up, which he quoted and said he wanted one of his friends to shut up, which was clearly aimed at me. I wanted to act dumb and asked him who he was referring to, but he didn't respond. I'm brokenhearted and sad. Was I being too clingy? I'm really sad right now. Even if I was being clingy, I believe I deserve better; I was only concerned about his well-being. I don't deserve to be treated like shit because of that.
