so I've been a self employed painter decorator for 6 years now. It's been a steady and consistent job (got me a mortgage, been able to work on my fixer upper of a property and my van). I even completed a contract with a children's hospice with 31 en suites painted.
But this has been the worst year in terms of business and im in a bad place.
I just don't receive many enquiries as I usually do and I've had too many weeks off work at this point. The last salt in the wound was a client having me booked in for a month to paint a full house only for them on day 2 to tell me they can no longer afford the paint and have pulled the plug (btw she bought paint that was £120 per 5 litres!).
I've been able to have a job booked in for the next 2 weeks but that's pretty much it for now with nothing else on the horizon.
I love being self employed. It's hard work and takes up most of my time for sure but I rarely feel stressed over it and felt proud to be my own boss. But now I'm feeling like a loser. I studied at uni (got a poor grade), don't have much work experience outside of painting and I just don't know what else I could possibly do. My people skills are very limited (hence why I loved being solo) and have no idea what work is possibly want to do without feeling like I've given up or embarrassed.
I always felt like lower class compared to everyone I know with careers, frequent holidays and nice cars. But now it feels solidified. It's my fault really. I chose the career and gave myself a hard life where I had to work hard to make small money. But now I can't even do that.
I'm going to contact agencies for any work going around, which is where I was when I graduated uni.
I understand self employment can be risky and inconsistent but I had some pretty solid years until now. If I can't keep the business going I just have no idea what I could do.

I am sorry that things have come to this and I hope you pick up more work soon. If you can't keep this going you will find something else to do. There are courses that you can do where you can learn to do something different. Best of luck.
ReplyHave you considered being the one who meets clients and engages the work/contract but you pay someone else to do the painting so you are free to get another engagement, and repeat, so there is always work in the pipeline. Best of luck, whether you switch line of work or scale your current line.
Courtesy notice: the following includes a reference to a book that contains writings over 2000 years old which are mostly parables about human nature, both vile human nature as well as moral human nature, parables that are meant to teach us to learn and grow, including the teachings of Christ Jesus. No religion required, and better yet: no public displays of devotion required, although the former and latter are admirable if practiced freely out of one's own free will and without the threat of being beheaded. Some bullies will label this "trolling", so "change the channel" now if of no interest to you.
1 Thessalonians 5:11
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
Mark 12:28-31
And Christ Jesus said the 2 greatest commandments are:
Love God first and foremost.
Love your fellow-being as you love yourself.
From following or not following these, all good or evil cascades, respectively.
Love...that powerful, invisible, intangible force that cannot be denied; even atheists live and die by it.
Mary, Mother of Christ, intercede for us with your prayers, now, and always.
And after our worst deeds - never forget God forgives us when we repent through Christ Jesus.
