If you want to go to Harvard, you should apply to Harvard, but I just want to point out that getting into an Ivy is a lot easier than getting into a specific Ivy. If you apply to every Ivy (that’s 8 total), you have about a 1 in 3 probability of getting at least one acceptance. If you apply to Harvard you have a 3.2% chance of getting in. If you don’t get into an Ivy and apply as a transfer, some ivys have higher transfer acceptance rates than first year acceptance rates. For example, as a first year, Columbia has an acceptance rate that’s about 3% but for transfer it’s closer to 11%. If you apply to every Ivy twice, once as a first year and once as a transfer, you have about a 50% chance of getting accepted to at least one of them. So basically what I’m saying is, if you want to go to an Ivy, it is possible, it just might not happen the first time you apply, and it might not be the exact Ivy you hope that it is. But it’s still achievable. If you don’t get into Harvard the first time, apply again as a transfer, and if you don’t get in the second time, apply as a graduate student. But going to a good university that isn’t Harvard will make it easier to get into Harvard, so even if you don’t get in, if that’s your goal, don’t be discouraged. It’s just probability.
