As a member of the United States military for the past 17 years I find it heart breaking that so many professional athletes are using something as sacred as our National Anthem as a "sounding board."
What makes our military so great is our respect for customs, courtesies and traditions. We respect and honor all those who have gone before us and given the ultimate sacrifice for our Nation. We live by a set of core values based on honor, courage and commitment. Freedom of speech and freedom of expression are two rights that we as Americans have the privilege of expressing, and as such it is the duty of each and everyone of us set the example for not only the youth of today, but for all who would look upon us as examples of our great Nation.
It's obvious that we as a Nation have our faults, however every mature and reasonable adult has an obligation to do and say the right things, set the example and demonstrate what right looks like. Wether you like it or not as an adult you are a role model and mentor to someone. We all have an obligation to be better, and treat our fellow Americans better.
Sitting or kneeling during the playing of the Star Spangled Banner or America the Beautiful is not setting the example. You've become an unwelcome and unwanted distraction to a few parts of what makes this Nation great, our Professional Sports leagues. Leagues of young men and women who are supposed to be professionals, setting the proper example for the youth of today.
There are and will always be some type of issues wether it be societal, economic, cultural etc as long as we have free will. It's up to us to be willing to be bigger than these issues and do the right thing when the issues arise.

I agree 100%. I read an article on Yahoo today about the topic and had commented that most people who have served take this kind of disrespect personally. Someone replied to the comment stating that they were active duty and were not offended by the kneeling. I suggested to them that they volunteer for color guard so they could get a better understanding of WHO is being honored by that flag and anthem.
I'd hate to see young active duty members losing that absolute respect for what stands for to salute that flag.
ReplyI think there are a lot of people missing the point on why Black people and more recently some White people as well aren’t standing for the National Anthem. The National Anthem is about freedom. Black people in America do not feel free because they are not free. It’s not about disrespect to the military, it’s about the fact that it’s fucking 2017 and Black people are still being disenfranchised. There isn’t a White person on the planet who can even understand what it’s like being Black in America. Racism is very much alive and clearly supported by the incompetent bum y’all voted into office. If you turn a blind eye to the shit that is happening right in front of your face, then you are just as much part of the problem. It’s not about who is right, it’s about what is right. Wake the fuck up. #takeaknee **I'm also a veteran, married to an active duty Marine who has more service than you (because that might seem to matter) and come from 2 generations of military service. This is about what our country has forgotten.
