There are many forms of art therapy, but the version featured in this video is designed specifically to encourage positive emotions, personal control, and a sense of meaning.
Participants were asked to write down a list of things in their life that made them feel happy or supported, and then associate a color to each of those things. Lastly, each person was asked to paint the colors on an outlined portrait of themselves where each color resonated for them.
After conducting this experiment the participants saw an average increase in happiness of 8.1%, with the highest spike in happiness of 36.7%.
If you have paint handy at your house, try giving this a try for yourself and see how you feel afterwards! Maybe your artistic side is more privy to writing poetry, playing an instrument, or any other creative outlet you’re interested in.
You don’t have to be an artist to express your artistic side. The next time you’re in a rut try something different like this that will get you out of your comfort zone and help you reflect on the important people in your life. Worst case scenario you tried something new, and best case you will increase your feelings of happiness. Sounds like a win-win situation to me!
