My new dog Zhuchka is the best, coolest and most fun dog around but also so so horrible. He is only a pup and I know he is still learning so I have faith he will get better in time as we teach him. If you tell him "no" he will stop, if you tell him "come" he comes, you tell him "sit" and he will sit. He runs beside me and my daughter in the woods and does not run away or leave our sides. He is eager to please, loving, and friendly BUT BUT BUT!!!!
He is so much more destructive than the last puppy I had several years ago. He chews things he finds around the house, despite having plenty of toys I got for him to destroy as he pleases. He has now destroyed one phone cord, one gaming headset, and my language notebook. I was 3 chapters into a workbook to learn Russian and he absolutely shredded my notebook for it. That was a lot of writing and volcab and work all turned into cyrillic confetti covered in a nice layer of shit?? Did I mention he shit inside??? Twice???? Can you imagine my shock at finding my tidy little living room absolutely covered in shredded paper and shit???
Now the shitting inside unfortunately can't be helped at the moment, it's not his fault. He let's us know when he has to use the bathroom. But, we recently rescued him from the pound, it's been one week. He was sick when we got him so he is on a very strong antibiotic. Everyone who's ever had to take such a thing knows it tears your stomach up, he has diarrhea and it just can't be helped right now unfortunately until the antibiotic course is up. The best I can do is let him out before and after work.
Anyways, he really is a great dog, but damn I forgot what a pain in the ass a puppy can be. I think I may need to keep him in a kennel when I am gone.
I've always been against kennels since I was a teenager. We had a family dog back then named Reggie who was scared of storms. My parents put Reggie in his kennel when they went to work, but midday when no one was home a large storm rolled in and I guess Reggie got really freaked out. He partially busted the metal kennel and managed to impale himself on the bars. My brother found his lifeless body. Because of this, I'm scared to kennel any dogs at home when no one is around.
But I can't let Zhuchka continue to break things as he pleases so I think I will have to get over my kennel trauma.
I was angry when I came home of course, but not too angry because I know he is only a pup and a stray and maybe has never known a home before and doesn't know what is right and wrong. But if I think about it in a different light, it's all ok.
Him making a mess forced me to clean, I can't remember the last time we washed the covers on the couch cushions and the couch really needed to be vacuumed out (thank the 7 year old for all the chip crumbs and bullshit down there.) The floor needed to be mopped and I have been slacking on my Russian lessons. Although it's not what I wanted, this dog forced me to wash the cushion covers, vacuum the couch, mop the floor, clean up clutter, and review all my previous studies in the course of a single afternoon. Even when he's really bad, he's still pretty good I guess.
I think we'll get a long just fine
